Good evening everyone. I think the question speaks for itself. I could obviously leave it at that, but there is so much more to just the simple question that is posed.
I would say that I have had an epiphany so to speak. The past few months Pam and I have been saving (with some setbacks) to get one of our bathrooms remodeled. Of course, during this time, we have had many different ideas, but I always had an 'idea' of what the cost to do such a job would cost should we choose to get it completed.
Now, I have done my share of renovations and in particular tile work. Anyone who has ever laid tile knows that this is a thankless job and even the simplest tile job can cause you much grief and leave you feeling like a spanked hind end. Plumbing is another story altogether - that and electricity I leave alone with the exception being replacing a light fixture or fixing a leak - anything beyond that - no thanks.
Okay - to the intent of this post. Again, I think myself pretty handy and I am also one who likes to do things myself not only to save a buck but to have that sense of accomplishment. When we got our latest quote I was pretty surprised at the bid presented and the first thing out of my mouth was 'I can do that for allot less'
Of course I ranted and pounded my chest for a spell then I realized that while I CAN do the job, it certainly would not be a professional job and would most likely cost me more in the long run than if I were to hire a skilled professional to do the bathroom remodel for me.
Okay - you are thinking 'what the heck is he trying to say?' I am trying to say the very same thing happens in the buying and selling of homes. Instead of hiring a professional Realtor who is skilled in not only the market but also in negotiations, ensuring the inspections are taken care of, being your advocate, etc - many think that they can go it alone and save themselves time and money only to find out in hindsight that it is just not that simple.
On the sell side, many FSBOs simply do not realize the effort a good listing agent puts into preparing, marketing, negotiating, and ensuring the sale of their home. On the buy side, many do not realize that they could have saved thousands had they had a Realtor to represent their needs and to ensure that they got the absolute best home at the best possible price.
Many times, we as humans forget that we are not the 'Jack of all Trades' and sometimes this costs us more in the long-run than it otherwise should have. So I ask - what is your trade or skill?
Just a few thoughts from a humble Clarksville Realtor...
